PSA: Resourcing For Health Before Viruses Come Around

Viruses don’t just mess with the integrity of a body, they weaken people. Can their spread be contained? Sometimes. Is there a role for vaccines? Yes, but they can’t do it all. Can people protect their baseline health so that that viruses don’t do as much damage? Definitely. And some of that is very straightforward, it just needs doing.

This post is about herbs that people say help them that way. It isn’t medical advice, and I’m not even going to make any specific recommendations.

Many protective herbs can be included in meals; most of those are in grocery stores or health food stores.

Many others are common weeds, and can be easily prepared as teas.

Many others are commercially available as tinctures or dried.

And many others can be grown with ordinary care, and making tinctures from them is straightforward.

What I am suggesting is that it’s worth learning from others about what helps them, and considering what they do that you might incorporate in what you do. For a deep dive, search for “herbal antivirals” and explore. Or, here are two resources prepared this winter to look through and consider:

BIG HONKING MEDICINAL HERB POST

A List of Covid Assistance‑things that work for me…

(Both of those posts are on ko-fi: go ahead and chip in if you find them valuable.)

This isn’t just about Covid. This year’s flu season seems to be bad. Populations of mammals, not just birds, are succumbing to H5N1 bird flu — could it jump next mammal to mammal, to human, to human to human? No knowing, but other zoonotic viruses have.

Where I’m coming from here: I’ve had all the viruses that children are vaccinated for. I’ve had swine flu. I’ve had cancer surgery. I’ve been too sick to lift my head off the floor. If I don’t take care, shingles will come at me. Or Lyme. Being debilitated by Lyme is what woke me up to not just relying on an immune system that goes hard, and looking for what I could do to strengthen my biological integrity, which led me to herbals. This winter, I stayed sick with Covid for half a month, which even swine flu didn’t do to me. Another wake-up call, to actually do what is good for me.

So the PSA here is, there’s a world of experience out there about what helps people live their lives in a world where diseases come around, rather than having the diseases run them, and it’s worth looking into what might be good for you that way.
