Seasons cycle, and storms come. Trees rooted in soil that is dark muck between loose stones over bedrock carrying seeping groundwater to soil a bit lower, to true freshwater deciduous swamp forest — trees still on the verge of land, spongy land — don’t all get to stay fully upright their whole lives.
