In the middle of August, having biked 45 kilometres to get to a Plant Walk at a cemetery at the edge of the Lanark Highlands, I decided to add half an hour to my loop to also go to a County Forest I’d spotted on the map. That place was what it was, not a place I will return to, but then on the way back I passed a house-sized boulder on a rise on the side of the road.

As short way further along, there was an absence of driveways and power lines. Sure enough, the county map showed a block of public land there. So on the holiday Monday I returned, and quickly found a place where a path began into woods that have been left to be themselves.

Rolling ridges there, giant trees, and so many boulders taller than me.
